SUV or crossover: which one do you need?
- Crossover (2WD or AWD) is enough for the Ring Road and the Golden Circle in summer.
- A real 4x4 SUV is required by law on F-roads, open from late June to early September.
- From October to April a 4x4 with winter tyres is the safest choice on icy roads.
- River crossings are not covered by any insurance, even with a 4x4. Never cross deep water.
- A 7-seat SUV like Kia Sorento or Land Cruiser is perfect for families and groups.
- Add gravel and sand and ash protection, it is the most common damage in Iceland.
SUV and 4x4 rental price in Iceland
SUV rental in Iceland starts from about €45 per day for a Dacia Duster in the low season and from €100-150 per day in summer. A large 4x4 like the Toyota Land Cruiser costs from €130 per day. To get a cheap price, book early for summer, rent for a week or more and choose a manual gearbox.
